May 2012, Frederick, Maryland- Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics is proud to join the Southern Frederick County Rotary Club and the Interact Club of Urbana High School in sponsoring the 5K For Chris Bedard. The benefit race will be held on May 20th, 2012 at 9am at the McKeever Family Farm in Ijamsville, MD. Parking is available at Urbana High School with shuttle service to the starting/finishing lines.

Chris Bedard was an ordinary high school sophomore student until a life threatening blood infection almost took his life. After 14 surgeries and one amputation, Chris has defied the odds and is on his way to recovery. All proceeds from this event will go towards the Chris Bedard Medical Fund. Bedard was hospitalized late last year with a staph infection and his left leg was amputated below the knee. He only recently returned home. Fellow students say medical costs related to his care and recovery have been steep.

“We (Ability) had done a presentation at the Rotary Club meeting a few years ago and one of the Rotarians remembered the talk on prosthetics,” explains John Jacobs, CPO and managing practitioner of the Ability Frederick office, “The club called us and asked if we would sponsor the event.” Jacobs goes onto say that these are the very types of events Ability and it’s offices get involved with. “This is what integrates business and community. We are glad to help Chris out.”

“I am thrilled to be doing the cycle to the sea this year,” explains Amy Street, Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist, “It is not only a great cause but I am riding with my dad and so that is extra special. We at Ability not only treat these types of patients but we are always looking to refer patients to programs such as the Adaptive Sports Program through Carolina’s Rehabilitation. It is important to give back.”
