Highlights

September, 2012, Gettysburg, PA– Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics’ Asheville, NC office will be participating in the 5th Biennial Stroke Conference, “Technology: The Changing Landscape of Stroke Care” on September 14, 2012 at the Biltmore Campus in Asheville, North Carolina.

The conference is being offered by Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), in collaboration with Mission Health System and CarePartners.  The conference will feature national speakers with topics of interest to Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Occupational/Physical Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Stroke Coordinators, Neurosciences, Nursing Homes, Orthotists and Home Health providers.

Ability will be demonstrating the new custom myo-electrically controlled elbow orthosis called Myomo.  The custom Myomo provides much needed augmented flexion and extension of the elbow for the post stroke patient who has the elbow range of motion but who cannot actively flex and extend the arm.  Ability’s orthotists and prosthetists will also be featuring the WalkAide functional electrical stimulation or FES device for those patients with foot drop as a result of a stroke.

“We are very excited to show off the Myomo,” explains Jacob Townsend, CPO and managing practitioner of the Asheville, NC office, “The Myomo elbow orthosis represents a big step forward in available stroke treatment options for the upper extremity.  In the past we really couldn’t offer our patients an effective upper extremity solution.  We’d see the patient for the foot drop associated with the stroke but simply didn’t have an effective treatment for the arm.  We look forward to collecting outcomes-based measures on this device.”
