Benjamin Fortson, CPO
Certified Prosthetist Orthotist
Benjamin D. Fortson, CPO, is an American Board for Certification (ABC) certified prosthetist orthotist based out of the Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics facility in Rockville, MD.
Ben became involved with prosthetics and orthotics after shadowing a family friend who was a practitioner at the University of California, San Francisco Orthotics and Prosthetics Center. He quickly fell in love with the hands-on fabrication aspect of the field, as well as the rewarding nature of helping people move past a mobility deficit, either via prosthetics or orthotics, through his own interactions with them.
After getting his master’s degree and completing his orthotic residency at the University of California, San Francisco, he completed his prosthetic residency at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. Recently, Ben was fortunate enough to co-write a chapter in the Atlas of Orthotics and Assistive Devices on lower limb orthoses for individuals who have suffered a stroke.
Ben’s expertise includes all types of prosthetic devices and inpatient and trauma orthotics. He enjoys finding new and interesting ways to mix technologies and techniques from different eras and domains of prosthetics and orthotics to solve challenging problems. He empowers people to be their best self through being goal-oriented in device design and allowing the patient to define normal and success for themselves.
