YMCA Teams up with Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics to Collect Prosthetic Limbs for Amputees
Exton, Pa March 2012- Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, in places like Haiti, Philippines, Bolivia, and Dominican Republic spark a dire need for prosthetic limbs for amputee victims. In an effort to help amputees in need around the world, local amputees have generously donated their old limbs to Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. These limbs will be distributed through the Physicians for Peace network of “Walking Free” partners in countries where they will make a profound difference in the lives of others.
The event will be held at 12pm on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the YMCA located at 605 Airport Road, West Chester, Pa 19380. With the help of volunteers from the YMCA Adaptive Sports Program, Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc. team members will disassemble the donated limbs so the components can be more easily distributed and utilized. The limb parts will then be prepared and packaged for shipping to Physicians for Peace, an international, humanitarian, non-profit, medical education organization dedicated to building peace and international friendships in developing nations.
The local limb donation drive is one of a series Ability has conducted this year across Pennsylvania and Maryland. Because of national legislation, these limbs cannot be reused within the United States. “Fortunately, we are able to recycle the parts of these limbs for use in people in developing countries, who would not otherwise have access to prosthetics services,” says Jeffrey M. Brandt, President of Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc.
“Physicians for Peace is so thankful for the support of companies like Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics,” said Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.), the president and CEO of Physicians for Peace. “Each patient who benefits from the gift of a prosthetic limb has a renewed opportunity for a productive life in school, on the job and with their families and friends. Each donation makes a world of difference.”
