Ability Collects Used Prosthetic Limbs to Disperse to Patients in Need
With the earthquake tragedy in Haiti sparking a dire need for prosthetic limbs for amputees, Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. has been collecting used prosthetic limbs for donation through Physicians For Peace.
The Ability offices in Exton, PA, Gettysburg PA, Hagerstown, MD, Frederick, MD, and York, PA—are currently serving as the drop-off points for those wishing to make a profound difference in the lives of others. Limbs collected will be distributed through the Physicians For Peace network of “Walking Free” partners in countries such as the Dominican Republic, the Philippines and Haiti.
On Thursday, Dec. 16, starting at 1 p.m. the donated prosthetic limbs will be collected at the Ability office in York, PA. The centralized location for donation drop-off is the Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics office located at 960 S. George St. York, PA. – Across from the WellSpan Hospital.
The Dec. 16 donation drive in York, PA is the latest in a series of limb drives that Ability has conducted this year. To date, over 100 prosthetic limbs have been collected, with a value in excess of $750,000. Because of U.S. law, these limbs cannot be reused within the United States. Purchased new, the limbs would range in price from $8,000 – $25,000 each.
In the past year alone, Ability has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in prosthetic limbs to Physicians for Peace, an international, humanitarian, non-profit, medical education organization dedicated to building peace and international friendships in developing nations.
“The numbers are unfathomable —perhaps tens of thousands of amputees,” says Jeff Brandt CEO of Ability who is coordinating the donations. “The unspeakable loss suffered in places like Haiti has shattered a nation, but hopefully receiving these limbs will give the survivors
a glimmer of hope for the future.”
“Physicians for Peace is so thankful for the support of companies like Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics,” said Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.), the president and CEO of Physicians for Peace. “Patients who benefit from the gift of a prosthetic limb have renewed opportunities for a productive life, in school, on the job and with their families and friends. Each donation makes a world of difference.”
